So much food, so little nutrients

Have you heard the phrase, “Overfed but undernourished?” Unfortunately, it accurately describes a large percentage of the Western population. We face skyrocketing levels of obesity, yet the foods we consume are stripped of crucial nutrients, such as fat-soluble vitamins and minerals.

Some of the staple foods we consume as a nation, such as white flour and bread,  are enriched with vitamins. However, these synthetic vitamins are poorly absorbed and lack the naturally-occurring cofactosrs needed for assimilation. Americans chronically lack nutrient-dense foods.

Fake nutrients vs. real nutrients

Many doctors, dieticians and pediatricians recognize some of the signs of nutrient deficiency. They frequently recommend products such as Boost, Ensure, and Pediasure shakes. However, this can compound the problem of nutrient deficiency since these beverages contain not only poorly-absorbed synthetic vitamins but also a host of unsavory ingredients.

For example, the ingredients in vanilla-flavored Pediasure are…

Did stress push you off the healthy habits wagon? How to get back on track#android#iBelieve#family

This article has some helpful insights from one of our, Featured Doctors.

It seems the times when we most need to support ourselves with healthy habits is when we are most apt to fall off the wagon. It can happen during major life changes or stressors, such as a move, the end of a relationship, or change in job status. Although the desire to comfort ourselves with sweets, junk foods, and too many days off from the gym are powerful, in the long run slacking off just adds to the stress. Instead of beating yourself up (which just causes even more stress), honor the fact that you’re in a tough spot and take small measures to slowly work your way back into a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Once you see how even the smallest changes transform into more energy and peace of mind it will motivate you to increasingly expand what you include in your healthy habits routine.

With that in mind, here are some gentle and easy steps to keep you from getting sucked into the abyss of destructive habits during stressful times.

Go for a walk. Have you stopped working out? Then walking is a gentle, pleasurable way to reawaken your physical body while settling the mind. Exercise is a magic bullet when it comes to health, but too much exercise stresses the body and causes inflammation. If a major life stressor has you feeling weaker and more tired than normal, that may be your body’s way of telling you it needs extra rest to cope. Walking’s physical benefits are only part of the story; research shows walking, especially in a natural environment, lowers stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting energy.

Make veggie smoothies. When we’re beset by stress, healthy cooking can seem overwhelming. Frozen pizza or bowls of cereal may feel comforting at first, but their effects on your blood sugar stability and brain chemistry will soon spike stress levels. One way to outsmart comfort-food cravings is to make veggie smoothies. Simply combine a few different vegetables, such as carrots, celery, beet, some salad or leafy greens, cucumber, avocado, ginger, etc. with filtered water, a small bit of fruit for taste and, if desired, some lemon juice and salt. People with hypothyroidism should be careful not to overuse raw cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, kale, or broccoli as it can inhibit thyroid function. Also, avoid the temptation to rely on all fruit smoothies or the use of super-sweet additions such as pineapple or fruit juice. The high sugar content creates stress for the body, something you don’t need more of.

Eating lots of veggies also improves the balance of your gut bacteria, which play a profound role in mood, stress, weight, and immunity.

Don’t be a hermit. When stress is high it’s tempting to retreat under a rock, but isolation can compound your troubles. Ample research has shown the stress-lowering and health-boosting benefits of healthy socialization. Get together with friends, join meetup.com groups, take classes, go to church…being around other people boosts feel-good brain chemicals and is a reminder you’re not the only one with big life struggles.

Healthy or Just a Pretty Name? How to Make Sense About Sugar#family#android#follow

I get a lot of questions from readers and at conferences about sugar. It can be confusing to make sense of the numerous names for sugar or to determine what a serving size is, but hopefully my answers will help clarify things just like my email did for this reader…

Manufacturers craftily disguise sugar in many forms. Some of them sound healthy, and others you’d have no idea they were actually sugar. Don’t believe me? Take a look at these 50 – yes, 50! – alternate names for sugar.

  1. Barley malt
  2. Beet sugar
  3. Brown sugar

Experts talk about critical Ebola missteps in the U.S.#Ebola#follow#iBelieve

By Sharyl Attkisson

WASHINGTON (WJLA) – Since 2002, the U.S. government has given local health departments more than $9 billion tax dollars for emergency readiness. Billions more have gone to hospital preparedness and related efforts. So why has the U.S. Ebola response been marred by critical missteps?

“I have no doubt that we will control this importation or case of Ebola so it does not spread widely in this country,” says Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control.

But confidence has been pierced by the CDC’s wavering protocols and assurances, as one case has grown to four.

“At the state, local and even federal level, there have been a series of missteps that literally we cannot allow to happen again,” says Larry Gostin, a global health expert and Georgetown University law professor who is advising Obama officials on Ebola.

Those missteps range from a Texas hospital discharging Liberian Thomas Duncan while ill…

Living the American Dream#Vaccines#iBelieve#follow

While American’s want to trust that health officials are acting in the best interests of the public, one has to wonder if that is actually the case given some of the actions of some leaders, not to mention the huge payoffs at stake if they can jump from government to private industry or simply dance between the two. Now of course there is nothing illegal about moving from a federal agency to the private sector but the monkey business involving the 3 leaders we highlight in this video may make you stop to think.

For starters, Dr. Julie Gerberding headed CDC from 2000-2008. She famously said in an interview on CNN,

“So if a child was immunized, got a fever, had other complications from the vaccines. And if you’re predisposed with the mitochondrial disorder, it can certainly set off some damage. Some of the symptoms can be symptoms that have characteristics of autism.”1

So according to Dr. Gerberding, vaccines can cause fevers and complications that lead to the symptoms of autism, but they don’t cause autism. That may be the best example of semantics we have ever heard.

If that is not bad enough, a CDC whistleblower…

Govt. Researchers: Flu Shots Not Effective in Elderly, After All#Family#iBelieve#follow

by

An important and definitive “mainstream” government study done nearly a decade ago got little attention because the science came down on the wrong side. It found that after decades and billions of dollars spent promoting flu shots for the elderly, the mass vaccination program did not result in saving lives. In fact, the death rate among the elderly increased substantially.

The authors of the study admitted a bias going into the study. Here was the history as described to me: Public health experts long assumed flu shots were effective in the elderly. But, paradoxically, all the studies done failed to demonstrate a benefit. Instead of considering that they, the experts, could be wrong–instead of believing the scientific data–the public health experts assumed the studies were wrong. After all, flu shots have to work, right…

…But when they finished, no matter how they crunched the numbers, the data kept telling the same story: flu shots were of no benefit to the elderly. Quite the opposite…

How strong IS your Immune System?#Ebola#Utah#Family

Have you ever wondered, how strong your immune system is?

Here is a quick, and simple list of steps you can take to get an idea. Follow your inner compass to determine the order, and time frame best for you.

Being some things like marijuana can take a month to clear the system, then a case by case scenario will help determine how long to stay free of items that cloud your true health status.

  • Remove stimulants (coffee, caffeinated tea, sugar, caffeine, narcotics, tobacco, alcohol, wheat, ritalin, and other prescription stimulants)
  • Simplify the ingredient list so that you know what you are ingesting.  (This includes marijuana, which contains over 400 different chemicals)
  • Steer clear of GMO’s.
  • Drink purified water so that you know what you are putting into your body.
  • Refrain from pasteurized dairy.
  • Eat organic meats.
  • Get proper sleep.
  • Remove pain killers.
  • Remove over-the-counter drugs.
  • Avoid dangerous fillers, question Anything that you put into your body.
  • Consider which prescriptions, or in some cases, if any are necessary for you.
  • Do you require antibiotics on a regular basis?  Know that many individuals, and families go years, and years without requiring an antibiotic.

How do we know how are body is truly functioning if we are ingesting things that mask the feeling.

I have found, along with many others, that as we simplify the diet, we can listen better to what the body requires, to function Well.

There are numerous, simple detoxes to speed the clearing of toxins from out of our bodies.

I find a 1-2 month clearing will be quite telling. Don’t run faster than you have strength, but be wise.

Then choose which items to add back in, refrain from, and implement in moderation.

Many health practitioners suggest adding back in one at a time so that you can find how your body responds to any one thing.

With such a serious health outbreak as Ebola, I can’t think of a better time to ask the question:  How healthy am I?

Time is of the essence!!   Now is the time to strengthen the immune system.

There are many compassionate, and well-educated health professionals that can help along the way.  I suggest finding one that is trained in functional, integrative, and/or holistic methods.

Below are some articles with suggestions to help during this regimen.
