Gardasil, from normal to nightmare after two injections.
This is Tyler, my youngest daughter and an amazing young woman of God. During one of her regular medical check-ups, the doctor recommended that she be given the HPV vaccine, Gardasil. I trusted that the doctor was giving me complete and accurate information – this is what I was taught to do – trust the doctor. Because of this trust, Tyler’s life has become a nightmare.
Tyler is now a competitive gymnast who cannot do gymnastics. She is a teenager who cannot go hang out with her friends, a student who cannot go to classes and a sister who cannot help her siblings with homework. She is a daughter who cannot sit and eat dinner with her family.
Tyler was given the first of a 3 shot series on April 15, 2012. Immediately after the injection she fainted and was out for about 45 seconds. Within days she began having severe daily headaches and insomnia ensued from there. Over the summer she was hospitalized several times to help with pain, nausea, vomiting, and lack of sleep. At this point, the doctors diagnosed her with migraines.
She missed the entire last quarter of her freshman year but was an excellent student who had maintained good enough grades to pass her classes. She had to quit gymnastics because of the pain.
Not realizing the cause of her symptoms, we took her to have the second shot on August 14, 2012. She then began having severe neck and back pain that on occasion radiated into her arms and legs (diagnosed as fibromyalgia for lack of any other explanation), insomnia, persistent nausea, dizziness, chronic fatigue and migraines in addition to the chronic daily headache.
Not knowing what caused this onset of ‘fibromyalgia’ we took her to the doctor frequently and hospitalized her when necessary. We were completely baffled by the rapid decline in her health.
She missed her entire sophomore year of school but had a tutor come into our home – she barely passed most of her courses and ended up having to drop some classes due to inability to keep up.
It was purely by the grace of God that we determined she had an adverse reaction to the vaccine which caused so many health issues.
She has now been officially medically diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic daily headache with frequent migraine & dysmenorrhea. These are all conditions she never had to deal with prior to the HPV vaccine. The doctors refuse to admit any possible connection.
We have tried everything presented to us, with little or no improvement. The doctors continue to try to treat the diagnosis of fibromyalgia but the symptoms are not responding to the treatments. They continue to give her pills that simply cause more health issues. It seems crazy to continue with the pills but we do.
The medical community says she will have to live with the pain for the rest of her life. They recommend that we seek alternative treatments to help ease the discomfort – which is very costly and not covered by insurance.
We have even attended a pain clinic in Cleveland to teach her how to “live with the pain.” A lifetime of pain is not what any parent envisions for their child. This is not what our faith says her destiny should be!
Our entire family’s life has been completely turned upside down since Tyler’s Gardasil injections. In addition to her trials, I lost my job during one of her many hospitalizations. I continue to be unemployed due to her frequent flare ups and doctor’s appointments. My husband works very hard to provide for us, but it’s not the same as it was when we had two incomes!
Tyler wants to get her driver’s license, get her GED, hang out with her friends, go to college…she just wants to be normal again! Our daily prayer is that she will soon have her life back and we will have our daughter back!

As I was driving today, I was thinking of how the arts are a wonderful supplement to healing. I imagine you have wonderful music, smells, and scenery where you live. Later today, I was kicking back, and felt like reading some scripture. As I read over a couple of verses, I couldn’t help but think of our day, and how merciful God is, and if he can be patient then I can too. Sometimes, I get upset with injustices, and the poor treatment so many of us have encountered, and I just remembered that we are not alone. That none of us are perfect, but as we learn, we can reach out to others. Here are the verses I read:
3 Behold, it is expedient that much should be done among this people, because of the hardness of their hearts, and the deafness of their ears, and the blindness of their minds, and the astiffness of their necks; nevertheless, God is exceedingly merciful unto them, and has not as yet bswept them off from the face of the land.

With all the turmoil in the world around us, and more directly, with injured children being ignored by those that can help. These verses brought me a lot of peace. I do believe miracles can happen.

The FDA has exclusive authority to approve and license vaccines. The FDA also oversees vaccine safety,and herein lies a vast problem that demands correction. Prior to Natasja being vaccinated with Gardasil, she led a very active and healthy lifestyle. Now please see what has happened to her since the Gardasil vaccine was injected into her body.
My daughter Natasja had the three shots of Gardasil in May, August and December of 2011.
After her second shot she started having severe headaches, tunnel vision and short term loss of her peripheral vision. I went to the doctor as I was concerned. Natasja developed a sore throat after her third vaccination. She could not eat and was in a lot of pain throughout her body. My daughter was very ill for 14 days.
Natasja’s pains did not diminish throughout 2012 and the level of her pain increased. This continued and there did not appear to be any respite. As we continued into the early part of 2013 her health deteriorated. The pain was constant and she had sensory disturbances on the right side of her face and down her right arm along with blurred vision and severe headaches. Natasja was hospitalized and after a lumbar puncture was diagnosed with a neurological disorder and Borrelia, otherwise known as Lyme disease.
That was the very first diagnosis we had received. The situation did not improve throughout 2013. Things just became more frustrating as her symptoms seemed to increase all the time. Her headaches became more painful, she was nauseous, vomiting a lot of the time, having heart palpitations and finding it very difficult to concentrate. There was hardly a part of Natasja’s body that was not painful.
We were of course attending the doctor or being admitted again into hospital. She was also starting to get some physiotherapy. Her second diagnosis in March of 2013 was severe pain and benign intracranial increased pressure.
Joint Swelling
The year did not get any better. Natasja’s pains became more severe. Her knee joints would swell up (see picture) and at times she could hardly manage to get upstairs. Her stomach cramps increased and she was having serious diarrhoea. During this time we were consulting a Rheumatologist and also a hormone specialist who was concerned about Natasja’s size and height.
In August 2013, Natasja was hospitalized again as she was still having serious headaches and continued to be nauseous. This time she was diagnosed with Cephalalgia which is described as a pain in her head caused by dilation of cerebral arteries or muscle contractions or a reaction to drugs.
The headaches and feeling sick continued and was truly disrupting her life. She was still losing feeling in her left leg but as always the doctor had no idea why this was happening. This doctor wanted to try and keep a watchful eye on how she was progressing and I did mention to him about the HPV vaccine. Natasja was put on to another drug, amitriptyline 10 mg which was to be increased until she was on seven tablets a day.
She was still going to school, or trying to, but it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to do so. The school was very good in that they provided a bed for her to have a rest if she needed to. Eventually they allowed our daughter to go for a few hours per day and to attend in classes that would not be too difficult for her.
Then in October 2013, Natasja had to be admitted again to Frederiksberg Hospital and this time she was diagnosed as having POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). This condition is an abnormality of the functioning of the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system. Some of the medications she is on do not appear to be helping and they will be reviewing these and making changes as and when they think it is right to do so.
Natasja has lost of a lot of weight and her body is bloated as if there is a lot of fluid retention. Her legs are particularly vulnerable to this swelling.
Things do not improve as we go into 2014. To allow our daughter to sleep we had to call the emergency medical service who gave her a morphine tablet. In January, she was re-admitted to hospital, yet again.

Natasja is now home. They could not find the reason for her symptoms. They have only tried psychiatric treatment and she’s been promised a ski trip with the hospital on the 5th April 2014 to France so she can mix socially with others and try physical exercise.
She has her ups and downs, with pain worst in her knees, stomach and head. She has started home schooling run by the school. She also started handicap riding but had so much pain after two days that she had to stay in bed for a further two days afterwards. She has had a conversation with a psychiatrist at the hospital and they think it would be good for her to continue with this so we shall see what comes out of it. They say that the reason for her headaches and pain is psychiatric.
Gardasil: I want my healthy daughter back.
I feel that the medicine she gets for her POTS has started to work well, she is not so often dizzy any more, just a little sometimes when everything goes black and she has to immediately lie down on the floor.
How can someone who once was so healthy suddenly develop all these illnesses and symptoms? My greatest wish is that someone out there would help my daughter to recover, to be free of pain and to become the once healthy, happy and very active young woman she once was.
All I want is for my daughter to recover and become her old self again. That surely is not too much to ask.
Anja and Natasja, I am so sorry you have had to endure such a painful and grievous trial. You are no doubt stronger and wiser for it but I hope and pray events turn for the better for you.
I would use caution with the psychiatric care at this point. If the doctor doesn’t believe the symptoms are real than his care could prove detrimental.
I have recently become aware of girls and at times their mothers as well being committed rather than healed from physical symptoms. A cowardly, and lazy alternative to healing victims of the Gardasil reactions.
Unfortunately, some will cling violently to the belief that vaccines cause little to no harm and to think that there is any doubt remaining on the effects of the Gardasil/Cervarix vaccine is hard to believe. A situation we just have to deal with but there is good news.
Our Heavenly Father has heard the pleas and prayers and there are wonderful practitioners who have stepped up to the plate. Men and woman of great compassion and skill. I wouldn’t waste any time with practitioners who do not understand your plight. Every day is so precious and Natasja can have healing begin right away.
Distance is not a consideration. You can phone/skype and start recovery today. You are woman of strength and this weighty trial can begin to be lifted. What a beautiful family you are and I have chosen a favorite artist to soothe some of the heaviness of the day in the clip below.

The Prayer

This is a very sensitive topic, and before I go further, let me first point out that the title of this post is not “8 Reasons Why You Should Not Vaccinate Your Child.” This is my personal decision based on research, and I am glad to live in a country where some choice is still afforded to those who wish to abstain.
A real conversation about vaccines is almost nonexistent in the media, where people are often segregated into either the “pro” or “anti” camps. When I speak to people about this directly, on the other hand, the conversation is always more nuanced and complex. While I certainly acknowledge the historical data that back up vaccine effectiveness, it might be time to have a fresh discussion.
My hope in writing this post is to promote honest and mutually respectful discourse, not to further polarize this topic. My daughter is only six months old right now, and I may consider changing my mind. I only hope you, the reader, are as open. I invite you to share your thinking in the comments section.
1. I fear the risk of complications from vaccines more than I fear the risk of complications from infection.
I am not fearful of short-term infections that come and go, like chicken pox. I had it growing up, and it would leave my daughter with lifetime natural immunity. Furthermore, the “long-term consequences of preventing natural exposure to agents covered by vaccine are not known.”
I am much more fearful of what comes through that needle, because the risks of vaccine side effects are real. Additionally, vaccine side effects are largely underreported because the passive nature of the legal system puts the onus on the victim to make the connection, file extensive paperwork, and report the issue.
Here is just a small list of potential side effects:
Please know, I am not saying that vaccines cause ALL these chronic diseases, but we are getting precious few answers as to what is causing them. Until we really understand the mechanisms of this issue, I am not willing to take that risk.
2. I can vaccinate my daughter, but she can contract the infection anyway.
No vaccine is 100% effective. Some tout 95% effectiveness, others less than that. Last year’s flu vaccine was 56% effective in adults and children and only 9% effective in the elderly.
Furthermore, it has been repeatedly determined that fully vaccinated children (and adults) can still get the infection the vaccines are designed to prevent. In fact, in recent outbreaks of whooping cough, the majority of those affected were fully vaccinated. Researchers have also speculated that some forms of whooping cough are becoming resistant to vaccines. Either way, with suboptimal efficacy and proven risks, this is not a chance I am willing to take.
3. I don’t trust drug companies.
In theory, scientific studies help us to separate fact from fiction. However, this recent review of scientific literature caught my attention. It warns about drug companies’ heavy influence on all aspects of health care research and strategy. The industry “masterfully influences evidence base production, evidence synthesis … and professional decisions. [sic]” Given that, how can I be sure I am getting science, not marketing?
My faith in pharmaceutical companies isn’t helped by the fact that they’ve paid more than $11 billion in fines from 2009 to 2012 for criminal wrongdoing. Admittedly this wasn’t because of vaccines, but the point is that these companies have a track record of not being trustworthy. What’s worse is that these huge sums are just considered “the cost of doing business,” as they pale in comparison to the profits they make.
4. I cannot sue the doctor, the nurse, or the drug company if there are serious side effects.
Unlike other drugs or products on the market, if my daughter has a serious, or even deadly, reaction to a vaccine, I cannot go all “Erin Brokovich” and sue the doctor, the nurse, the drug company, or form a class action lawsuit with others.
Thanks to the passage of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act in 1986, the “Vaccine Court” was established within the Court of Federal Claims. By 2010, this program had paid nearly $2 billion in compensation to injured parties who said their health issues were caused by vaccines.
5. We don’t know enough about the human microbiome to understand how it could be affected by vaccines.
In the last two years, we’ve learned a lot more about our interaction with microbes. We now know we have 10 times as many germs as cells in the body (collectively called the human microbiome), and that more than 99% of them are mutually beneficial, supporting our digestion, immunity and metabolism. We need them and they need us, and the quicker we learn this lesson, the better.
How does this relate to vaccines? First, new research from Stanford University shows that adults can develop immunity to microbes they’ve never encountered, which goes against the traditional immunity dogma that you have to be exposed to the germ itself. Could there be a less risky way of gaining broad-spectrum immunity?
Secondly, we have precious little understanding of how vaccines affect microbial balance, but we do have a history of making interventions that seem like a good idea at the time, but backfire spectacularly. Just this week, the CDC Deputy Director said we have reached the end of the antibiotics era.
There are some obvious parallels here. For the majority of the 20th century, antibiotics were seen as our best tool for dealing with all bacterial infections. Now, after generations of killing off bacteria with antibiotics, we’re starting to see the negative side effects of this strategy. Not only are we breeding antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but the destruction of our microbiome is linked to many chronic diseases which have no known cure. It seems clear to me that vaccines at least have the same potential.
6. The mechanism of herd immunity is not fully understood, and some believe it’s over-hyped.
Up until this point, I have focused on those factors that directly affect my daughter. Unlike any other medical intervention, population-based vaccine strategy also relies on the “herd” to protect weaker members, providing the rationale for forcing everyone to vaccinate their children.
However, there are some reasons to question the notion of vaccine-induced herd immunity. First, the mechanism of herd immunity is not fully understood. Second, it is failing, and third, certain vaccines are proving to provide less durable immunity than previously thought, meaning our current assumptions about herd immunity rates are likely overestimated. Furthermore, disease can spread in fully vaccinated populations, with examples both in measles and mumps.
7. I have researched the ingredients in vaccines. They are toxic, I do not want them injected into my daughter.
This study says it better than I can: “According to the US Food and Drug Administration, safety assessments for vaccines have often not included appropriate toxicity studies because vaccines have not been viewed as inherently toxic.” However, according to the CDC, the following toxins are commonly found in vaccines: Aluminum, egg protein, antibiotics, formaldehyde, MSG and thimerosal. I have serious objections to injecting any of these into my daughter.
With one in six kids in America now having a developmental delay, and one in 88 kids in America with autism, surely it is as much my responsibility to help protect my kids from these issues as it is to protect them from an acute infection? It is more and more clear that autism is a disease born of environmental causes, not genetics, and aluminum, among others, is being fingered as a possible culprit.
Also, several new vaccines, like Gardasil, were fast-tracked through the evaluation process which is worrying when even drugs that have been shown to be safe in initial studies have subsequently proved to be toxic or carcinogenic, like birth control pills or the Vioxx debacle.
8. I’m a new dad. I’ve seen scientists get it wrong before, and I don’t want my daughter to be a statistic.
Between the 1920s and 1960s, the same groups that are used to sell vaccines today (doctors, industry marketing, etc.) were used to sell cigarettes, and this has become known as “tobacco science.” As we all know, “those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
Until we see a clear distinction between science and marketing, it’s likely that these same forces are still at work. Drug companies have a lot of work to do to regain my trust, and until that happens, I have to take full responsibility for my daughter’s health, even if it includes breaking cultural norms.
Speaking of full responsibility, I am actively engaged in improving her health and immunity through natural methods. It started with a natural birth, continued with exclusive breast feeding, and getting outdoors as much as possible. We have an amazing pediatrician and chiropractor who support our choices.
